The Book: Childhood in the redwoods, at a two-room school, in 72 black & white photographs plus 6 pages of text.

Author/photographer:  Elihu Blotnick’s photographs have appeared in Esquire, Life, Harper’s & Camera. The New York Times wrote about his first book of photos and poems (SALTWATER FLATS, BBM Associates, 1975): “Powerful and very personal images of contemporary America.” His work has been exhibited at the Stedelijk (the museum of modern art in Amsterdam), the photokina in Cologne, the Oakland Museum, the UC Graduate School of Journalism, and at the Ansel Adams Center. He has imagery in special collections at the Library of Congress and the California Historical Society.

Author’s Statement:  "Two-room public elementary schools remain a rare and endangered species, in spite of the fact that educators have discovered that learning in small groups is best. Canyon’s redwood setting makes the school a natural clubhouse, yet civilization is everywhere here; it isn’t a strait jacket, but a need, that may be worn casually, openly, even humorously."

Foreword: Ariel Fragment (famous person), or, if necessary, Deborah Klochko, former Director of the Ansel Adams Center, and/or Gary Nabhan, author of THE GEOGRAPHY OF CHILDHOOD: Why Children Need Wild Places.

Markets:  Childhood is universal. The remote setting lends romance. The quality of the photography transcends the limitations of time and place. Two Nikon Awards (bronzes) have been received for the photographs so far. The book can serve as an exhibition catalog.
Also, several reporters have been following the progress and development of this book. Prints and publicity will be available accordingly.
The book belongs in many categories: children’s, gift, photography, trade, museum and library, as well as history, education and California. Other possibilities are a children’s edition (mass market), magazine spreads, and foreign editions.

Packaging: Elihu Blotnick has considerable experience and awards in design and production, and has followed past books through to successful conclusions. Printed books can be delivered at $5 per book, in quantities above 5,000.

Printing Specs: 80 pages, 72 5x8 photographs (delivered to size), no bleeds, text throughout. ClS Cover, photographs front and back (included above). 9xll trim size, bound on the 11. Duotone plus varnish.

Delivery Date: With auction, or one month after contract, on disk.
